You probably know that smoke alarms are essential features of your home, but do you know why? Smoke detectors allow you to take quick action when a fire starts in your home. In emergencies like this, acting fast is crucial, as it will enable you to help keep yourself and your family safe from danger. It also means the fire department can more quickly come to your aid, possibly resulting in less damage to your house. Smoke detectors alert you quickly and clearly to a fire in the home. There are three main types of smoke detectors:
-
Ionization alarm: This type of smoke alarm includes an ionization chamber in which the air between two electrodes is ionized, allowing a current to flow between electrodes. When smoke enters the ionization chamber, it reduces the current between the electrodes and triggers the alarm. This type of smoke detector responds best to fires that flare up quickly (e.g., burning paper).
-
Photoelectric alarm: A photoelectric sensor and a light source emitting a beam of light are the main components of this alarm. When smoke enters the optical chamber and crosses the light beam, some light is reflected off the smoke. The reflected light triggers the alarm by hitting the photoelectric sensor. Photoelectric smoke detectors respond best to slowly catching and smoldering fires.
-
Dual smoke alarm: This smoke alarm is a combination of photoelectric and ionization alarms. This detector works well with any fire, regardless of the speed at which it catches.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, you should use both ionization and photoelectric technologies within your home, as residential fires can either be fast flaming or slowly smoldering. You can use a dual smoke alarm or install both an ionization and photoelectric alarm.
A general rule of thumb when maintaining your smoke detectors is testing them every month and replacing the batteries annually. Replace the entire smoke detector every ten years.
Having smoke detectors in your home can also save you money on your home insurance premiums due to safe home discounts. Since smoke alarms can help you reduce fire damage to your home by alerting you quickly of fires, this safety measure may be reflected in your premiums.
